Sydney Berry

2014 Junior Player Financial Assistance Recipient

Sydney Berry is the daughter of Chris and Carol Berry.  She is 12 years old and resides in Kingsport, TN.  Sydney began playing in tennis tournaments at the age of 8.  She attends Tri-Cities Tennis Acadamy (TCTA) in Bristol, VA, where she is trained by Coach Steve Brooks and practices with her dad.  In addition to tennis, she enjoys playing the violin, is a member of the Chess Club at her middle school, and also enjoys spending time with her family, friends and her dog, Zero.  Tennis has given Sydney a wonderful experience of travel and competition, and she has developed incredible friendships.

The financial assistance provided by the Tennessee Tennis Patrons Foundation has given Sydney better opportunities to participate in competitive play.  In Sydney’s words, “I enjoy playing tennis because I like the feeling I get when I win a match.  When I win a trophy or medal, I like putting it on the mantel.  The award paid for an entire weekend of tennis!  I am so grateful for the award.  When I opened the envelope, I was astonished.  I was so happy to have the opportunity!  Thank you!”

Good luck, Sydney!

  Takuma Walker

2014 Junior Player Financial Assistance Recipient

Takuma Walker began playing tennis when he was 7 years old; his family moved to Memphis in 2011.  Takuma likes the mental part of tennis and the chance to win, even when he gets behind.  His favorite professional players are Rafael Nadal, Kei Nishikori, and Takao Suzuki.  "I want to thank the foundation for its support of my travel and hotel costs.  It has been very helpful! My parents remind me frequently that tennis is an expensive sport, and that not all kids have the opportunity to play it.  I am full of gratitude for the opportunities which I have been given.  One day, you will see me at the US Open on the Center Court.  Please look for me!"

Good luck, Takuma!

Luke Plaisted

2014 Junior Player Financial Assistance Recipient

Luke and his family live in Chattanooga.  He is fifteen years old and in the tenth grade in a home schooled curriculum.  Although tennis is his biggest hobby, Luke is a member of a Shakespeare troupe, competes in Science Olympiad, and belongs to a speech and debate team.  He also enjoys video games, ping pong, and ultimate Frisbee.

Luke started playing tennis when he was seven years old and describes the competitive one-on-one environment that tournament play offers as his favorite part.  Luke's family plays and he is coached by his dad and practices with his brother.  "Traveling for tennis tournaments is very expensive.  The financial help that the Tennessee Tennis Patrons Foundation has given for these expenses has been a great encouragement to my parents and me.  That there is a group dedicated to helping junior tennis players like this is amazing.  Thank you so much."

Good luck, Luke!
